Career
Liesbeth Spies began her career as a researcher and project leader for Research voor Beleid in Leiden. From 1994 to 1998 she was a project leader at the Association of Provincial Authorities (IPO), and then worked for the province of South Holland until 2002, as a section head and division head in the fields of spatial planning, water and the environment.
From 23 May 2002 until 17 June 2010, Liesbeth Spies was a member of the House of Representatives for the Christian Democratic Alliance (CDA). From March 2007 to June 2010 she was also deputy leader of the CDA parliamentary party. The subjects on which she spoke for the party included local government, the Royal House, the environment, sustainability, energy and social affairs.
From November 2010 to April 2011, Ms Spies was acting chair of the CDA (outside the House of Representatives). Following the provincial council elections of 2 March 2011, she became a member of the provincial council of South Holland and then a member of the provincial executive, with responsibility for spatial planning and housing, economic affairs, and the Deltapoort spatial planning project for the area between Rotterdam and Dordrecht.
On 16 December 2011 Ms Spies was appointed Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations in the Rutte government.
Party political positions and outside activities
Liesbeth Spies has held various positions in the CDA, including membership of the young Christian Democrats and of the leadership of the parliamentary party (2002-2007). In 2011 she headed the CDA’s list of candidates for the elections to the provincial council of South Holland.
In 2007 Ms Spies became chair of the Dutch Sport Alliance and in 2010 chair of the Alphen aan den Rijn-Nieuwkoop Hospice Group.
